Nicole & Rob

This photographs of Nicole and Rob typify my experience working with a couple for their engagement session. Like almost all couples being photographed together for the first time, they began with giggles and questions. Everyone seems to feel weird being in front of the camera at first, and I do myself on those rare occasions! The fantastic thing about the shyness and hesitance is that it translates to silly smiles that give way to broad ones, and tentative interactions that flow quickly into authentically comfortable body language.

I've given a lot of thought to the how and why of photographing people lately, and defined a few of my motivations. One of my deep interests lies in portraying the characteristics of our relationships to each other, and another special inspiration is our visual relationship to the space around us. Oh, and let's not forget drama, another truly favorite element!

These photos seem to shift perceptibly towards something unexpected, partly because of the rapidly approaching dusk, but also because their comfort in front of the camera increased as it became easier to ignore in favor of savoring a few moments together in the park on a fall evening.
