Saturday Sounds

Below is a poem I wrote a few months ago, I was inspired to post it while LAYING ON THE COUCH this Saturday afternoon with Doc Holiday, resident yorkie, snuggled under the blanket with me and Bambi resting her chin on my leg. LAYING ON THE COUCH is in all caps because it is a rare luxury, but an important thing to do when possible.

Saturday Sounds

An unwelcome
High and insistent
Whine
Cuts through the closed door of sleep

Fetch the whiner from her crate, and the other two
Plop them one by one into fluffy pile of swirl-striped cotton
Carefully climb again under sheet and blanket
Tilt head just so on pillow
Edge door closed a while more

Then, abrupt and annoying
The fakely friendly tune of alarm
Heard most mornings
Rouses all from sticky black-and-white comfort

Roll into waking like a snow ball downhill

Predictable hums mixed with road-born jostles
Bear us to the park
Too loud against closed sailcloth overhead
The piercing dramatic bark of recognition echoes

Released in tall grass off paved trail
These three swoosh wildly through
Their little bodies making free exultant contact

Listen, it is unexpected
This sound of coarse green parting
Roving softness
That clings to movement in perfect time
